Dear Applicant
I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in joining our exciting new Institute of Creativity and Innovation in Xiamen, China. Working closely with Xiamen University, we have developed programmes that complement the Chinese educational system by embedding creativity in every element of the curriculum. We are seeking talented individuals to support us in the delivery of a first-class education that will equip our Chinese graduates with the skills they need to thrive in the global creative workforce.
Success is not a destination – it is a journey. Excellence is not an ability. It is in fact an attitude. This attitude to excellence is what we strongly encourage as part of our ethos. Success for us will be reflected in the profiles of world-class professionals and leaders, in their industries and their contributions to society and the economy.
We want graduates from the Institute of Creativity and Innovation in Xiamen to become a driving force for China’s creative industries in the future. And to make that happen we need to recruit talented staff who share our vision.
Professor Bashir Makhoul
Vice-Chancellor
The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is a unique centre of excellence supporting the UK’s world-leading reputation across the full breadth of creative arts professions. UCA prepares its students for employment and leadership in the creative industries through the provision of an intensive, studio-based education and instructs them in the use of industry-standard technical facilities.
Each of the University’s four campuses at Canterbury, Epsom, Rochester and Farnham are former art and design colleges established in the 19th Century. Today they
are thriving creative communities totalling over 6,000 students studying further education, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. At all campuses there are exceptional material workshops, digital facilities and high-quality gallery environments.
The University has strong alumni networks and counts among its graduates the international artist Tracey Emin CBE, fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes, retailer Karen Millen, award-winning director William McGregor and film director Gareth Edwards.
The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide named UCA as the Modern University of the Year 2019 and also ranks us as the highest of all specialist creative institutions in the UK. 96.9% of our graduates are employed or undertaking further study within six months of their graduation.
At the core of our teaching provision is a portfolio of longstanding and uniquely important courses, informed by our staff practitioners, researchers and four internationally-renowned research centres: the Crafts Study Centre (CSC), the International Textile Research Centre (ITRC), the Centre for Sustainable Design (CSD), and the Centre for Digital Scholarship. UCA’s REF2014 assessment noted a strong, collaborative, sustainable and vital research environment with over 50% of submitted outputs being judged to be internationally excellent, with the areas of photography and textile art judged as world leading.
Xiamen University is a highly prestigious university in China, the Times Higher Education ranks it 9th in China, in the top 100 across the whole of the Asia-Pacific region and in the top 500 universities globally. Their research is highly positioned internationally for its quality and impact, notably in the fields of Chemistry and Economics.
Xiamen University is based in the Fujian province of China and was founded by the Singaporean leader, entrepreneur and industrialist Tan Kah Kee in 1921. At present, its three campuses cover over 600 hectares, with a constructed area of 1.4 million square meters and its libraries hold 4.48 million volumes (including 39,204 gigabytes electronic volumes). Located along the coastline, Xiamen University is revered as one of the most beautiful universities in China.
The university is directly administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education and is highly rated nationally for subjects including journalism, chemistry and economics
The Institute for Creativity and Innovation will be a fully- integrated campus of Xiamen University, with a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. UCA will deliver at least 40 per cent of the teaching and will manage the quality assurance process to ensure that the courses adhere to UK Higher Education standards. Creativity is deeply embedded in the ethos of the Institute, which will offer a fresh approach to learning. ICI graduates will leave university with an internationally recognised dual degree from UCA and Xiamen University. At its launch in September 2020, the Institute for Creativity and Innovation will offer the following programmes:
• BA (Hons) Digital Media Technology
• BA (Hons) Visual Communication Design
• BA (Hons) Advertising
• BA (Hons) Environmental Design
Further courses – including postgraduate – will be added in subsequent years.
